The Anniversary Exhibition “Lightning Flashes” by Gheorghe Oprea, marking the 80th anniversary of the artist’s birth

The painting of Gheorghe Oprea represents a distinct chapter in the contemporary visual arts of the Republic of Moldova, through an original synthesis of figurative and abstract elements, as well as the combination of traditional decorative sources with a symbolic and philosophical reflection on identity. The artist works across a wide range of genres—portrait, landscape, still life, figurative and abstract composition—united within a coherent artistic vision that gradually evolved from realistic formulas toward increasingly laconic and abstract solutions.

Formed during the Soviet period, Gheorghe Oprea belongs to the generation that integrated national traditions within the language of modern visual art. His studies at the Republican College of Fine Arts “Alexandru Plămădeală” (from 1970) and later at “Ion Creangă” Pedagogical University (1984–1989), together with his long professional activity at the National Museum of Art of Moldova (1974–2014), contributed to the consolidation of a coherent and reflective artistic vision.

Gheorghe Oprea’s pictorial approach stands at the intersection of tradition and modernity, between the memory of rural space and the visual sensibility of the technological age. In his recent works, the palette opens toward luminous greys and dominant whites (Terrestrial Body, 2009; Emergence, 2011), while the rustic interior acquires a universalized expression, approaching the aesthetics of modern interiors.

The most recent stage of the artist’s work is marked by the development of two distinct visual directions, both incorporating abstract and decorative elements. Based on concepts crystallized throughout his creative trajectory, these series continue—morphologically—the reflections on the rustic interior and on the traditional carpet, transfigured into a symbol of the native landscape.

Overall, the artist’s oeuvre may be interpreted as a visual meditation on identity, where the house, the hearth, and traditional objects become signs of cultural continuity. Through the synthesis of decorative, symbolic, and abstract elements, Gheorghe Oprea shapes a personal artistic language representative of the evolution of contemporary Moldovan art.
