Temporary Exhibitions
On Tuesday, December 9th, 2025, at 4:00 p.m., the National Museum of Art of Moldova will inaugurate the commemorative exhibition “ANDREI SÂRBU. Archipelagos of Silence.” We warmly invite you to attend this event!
This exhibition does not aim to offer a complete retrospective overview of the artist’s pictorial discourse; instead, it focuses largely on the most significant stages in which Sârbu concentrated his artistic explorations on conceptual, non-figurative painting. During this period, he abandoned unnecessary details, eliminated any form of narrative, and pursued the search for pure form, while preserving the function of color—not only as a means of generating visual tension, but also as symbolic expression. The works on display are relatively large in scale, and the artistic language is based on the subordination of spontaneously constructed painterly material to a geometric structure, creating a perfect balance governed by an undefined order, reduced to its essential elements. Line and color fields extend across broad surfaces, suggesting a reality that transcends the physical boundaries of the canvas.
Andrei Sârbu must be understood as a phenomenon—a complete universe of artistic thought. From his debut to his final work, he developed a pictorial discourse of remarkable coherence, free of artistic failure. By embracing varied artistic languages, he created works grounded in a profound artistic and philosophical commitment. He had the merit of aligning the painting of the space between the Prut and the Nistru rivers, where he was formed and created, with the aesthetic tendencies of Western conceptual art. Moreover, he laid the foundation for a new aesthetic sensibility that influenced the local art scene even after his passing, leaving behind a body of work of undeniable value, worthy of inclusion among the legitimate models of universal art.
